I remember hearing the sounds of the ice cream truck rolling down the streets when I was a kid and being excited to run from playing in the backyard with friends to greet the truck. That moment, I waited at the gate for my parents or grandparents to decide if it was okay for me to buy a bubblegum ice pop. Somewhere between then and now, the ice cream trucks, unhealthy food vendors have decided, instead of going through the streets, that they would set up shop outside of the schools. Eliminating the parental oversight that kids need when it comes to sweets.
Abraham Dickerson is asking that we take away the ease for our children to access unhealthy snacks, not eliminate it completely. Many struggle to try to provide healthy eating habits without the ice-cream truck sitting outside the school.
As President of the Montclair NAACP, I can say this effort is exactly in line with the efforts of a healthy 2011 that has been in the forefront of Dr. Baskerville's efforts, the NAACP's President's Challenge, and even Michelle Obama's "Let's Move" campaign. I hope everyone who wants to help secure a healthier Montclair, signs the petition, and shares the petition with their friends and family.
